Modeling and engineering risk and complexity (MERC)
Dai fenomeni epidemici e i cambiamenti climatici e ambientali, all’ingegneria sismica e all’Industria 4.0, tutte le sfide cruciali dell’Umanità richiedono la capacità di sviluppare nuovi strumenti teorici e metodologie per comprendere e ingegnerizzare sistemi complessi e interconnessi sempre più grandi e interdipendenti. Questo programma di dottorato si rivolge a giovani e ambiziosi scienziati e ingegneri che vogliano lavorare a questi problemi aperti con forte impatto nella società in una maniera fortemente interdisciplinare e innovativa.
L’obiettivo principale del dottorato MERC è di formare ricercatori e professionisti superiormente qualificati, in grado di utilizzare un approccio sistemistico e interdisciplinare per lo studio e la gestione di sistemi complessi, la progettazione e l’ingegnerizzazione di sistemi resilienti e l’analisi e la gestione dei rischi e degli effetti a cascata. A tal fine il corso di dottorato in “Modelling and Controlling Risk and Complexity” offre un percorso formativo basato su un approccio multi- e inter-disciplinare incardinato sulla teoria dei sistemi e del controllo, lo studio di sistemi, infrastrutture e reti complesse, la teoria dell’affidabilità per la modellazione dell’incertezza, l’analisi e la gestione dei rischi derivanti da fenomeni naturali e antropici su sistemi complessi e interdipendenti e lo studio delle loro proprietà emergenti e degli effetti domino e a cascata.
Obiettivo principale del corso è quello di sviluppare nuovi approcci metodologici per lo studio del rischio e della complessità instaurando un circolo virtuoso tra teoria e applicazioni. Il programma si concentra sulla descrizione integrata e la gestione di fenomeni che interessano sistemi complessi e dei rischi a cui sono esposti, in diversi ambiti applicativi attraverso l’uso di metodi per la modellazione matematica, stocastica, computazionale e basata sui dati, strategie dell’ingegneria dei sistemi e del controllo e tecniche di machine learning.
Le aree applicative di interesse includono (ma non sono limitate a queste) l’ingegneria civile, l’ingegneria dell’automazione e del controllo, l’ingegneria matematica, l’ingegneria dell’industria di prodotto e di processo, le infrastrutture e le reti di distribuzione, l’economia e la finanza e l’analisi dei pericoli naturali e antropici.

- Borse di studio: ogni anno la SSM mette a concorso per questo dottorato 6 borse di studio da 19.000€ ciascuna. Ogni borsa è integrata da ulteriori fondi per attività di ricerca in Italia e all’estero.

Ogni corso sarà organizzato da un membro del collegio ma coinvolgerà anche docenti di chiara fama interni ed esterni alla scuola. Ulteriori attività seminariali e corsi brevi saranno organizzati e comunicati attraverso questo sito web.
